About the artwork
The composition centers on two US two-dollar banknotes arranged vertically within a cream mat. The lower note displays the traditional portrait of Thomas Jefferson, while on the upper note, the likeness is replaced with a bespectacled chimpanzee. The work is signed along the inner border and enclosed in a wide, sculpted dark green frame adorned with relief botanical motifs. Ilya Chichkan is an ironic and provocative painter and a key figure of Ukraine’s New Wave movement. Here, he applies his signature visual wit directly onto institutional iconography, contrasting high-relief historic framing with conceptual modification. Measuring 43 × 41 cm, the piece combines classical presentation with satirical imagery, functioning as a distinctive focal point in a private study, library, or contemporary art interior.Details
