About

“I don’t look for perfect images. In the process, I’m drawn to mistakes — a stray brushstroke or a blot of paint — the things that make the painting alive. It’s there, not in perfection, that the truth about me and the time I live in emerges.”

Anton Popernyak — Ukrainian artist, painter and graphic artist (b. 1986, Luhansk), working in abstraction, texture and spatial installations. His art is a poetics of limits, silence and light, where every gesture carries narrative weight and invites reflection.

The Poetics of Boundaries and Light in Popernyak’s Work

Anton Popernyak (b. 1986, Luhansk) is a Ukrainian artist working across painting, graphics and installation. He studied at the Luhansk College of Culture (2001–2006) and later at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv (2006–2010). Popernyak’s practice blends academic traditions with contemporary abstraction, focusing on silence and equilibrium as central motifs. His works stand out for their attention to texture, rhythm, and the use of light as an active compositional element. Often employing a restrained palette, he creates liminal spaces between landscape and inner state. He has taken part in numerous group exhibitions, including “Four Arts” (MSMU, 2013) and “At the Front Line” (Canada, 2020). His solo exhibition “Ukrainian Baroque” (2018) at Triptych Gallery in Kyiv marked a pivotal moment, reinterpreting baroque aesthetics through a modern visual language.
