About

"For me, art is a way to understand how the space we live in changes us, and how we, in turn, leave our marks upon it. In every collage or frame, I try to find the intersection between personal memory and collective history."

Ekaterina Ermolaeva is a Kyiv-based artist originally from Donetsk, whose practice spans conceptual photography, collage, and installation. Her projects explore the boundaries of identity, memory, and the transformation of urban environments. A PinchukArtCentre Prize nominee, Ekaterina masterfully works with archives, transforming documentary materials into profound philosophical reflections on the fragility of human existence.
Ekaterina Ermolaeva (b. 1985) is a prominent figure in the new wave of Ukrainian contemporary art, whose practice is rooted in a profound exploration of human identity and its transformations under the influence of the environment. Born in Donetsk and later relocating to Kyiv, the artist brought a sharp sense of the world's fragility and the instability of social structures to her work. Her artistic journey marks an evolution from documentary photography to complex multimedia installations, objects, and conceptual collages. Ekaterina masterfully works with archives, deconstructing the past through her signature "volume collage" technique, which allows her to create new meanings from fragments of reality. The central theme of her oeuvre is the interaction between the individual and space: how we change our surroundings and how they, in turn, reshape our consciousness. Her recognition as a PinchukArtCentre Prize nominee and a winner of Shcherbenko Art Centre competitions confirms her significant role in the contemporary art scene. Ermolaeva's works are not merely visual documentation but a complex analysis of memory mechanisms and the search for one's self in an era of constant flux and global uncertainty.
