About

"Art is an attempt to return a human to their original state, to the purity of perception. I do not invent the new; I try to remember what has always been within us. For me, sculpture is a prayer in material, where line and volume become tools for finding the Divine within the human."

Alexander Sukholit's bronze sculpture combines monumentality and inner tranquility. The artist works with the material, imbuing it with a living breath—in each plane, one senses a human presence, reduced to a state of contemplation. Generalized forms, simplified anatomy, and the absence of details shift the emphasis from external appearance to the meaning of existence. Bronze, with its deep, warm hue, lends the image a sense of eternity and a connection to the earth. Soft transitions of light on the surface create a sense of movement within a static form. The sculpture is perceived as a symbol of a person suspended between matter and spirit, between heaviness and elevation. This plastic calm reveals a philosophy of balance, which Sukholit achieves through the simplicity, weight, and silence of bronze.
Oleksandr Sukholit is a titan of contemporary Ukrainian plastics whose work bridges ancient archetypes and modern art. His style is defined by a deliberate simplification of form, relating his pieces to Paleolithic Venuses or archaic idols. For Sukholit, sculpture is not just volume but a spiritual body captured in bronze or stone. As a leader of the "Zhyvopysnyi Zapovidnyk" group, he reimagined sacred space through painting and graphics marked by expressive linearity. Avoiding decorativeness, the artist focuses on the primal power of motherhood, faith, and the union of humanity with the cosmos. He created a personal iconography where Greek myths intertwine with Christian dogmas. His influence on the Ukrainian art school is fundamental: he restored a sense of eternity and purity to art, free from fleeting trends. With works in the collections of the Ludwig Museum and NAMU, he is a living classic whose artistic language remains universal and timeless.
