About

"Art is the only territory of absolute freedom where a person can be sincere. My task as an artist is not to invent new worlds, but to learn how to correctly perceive the one that already exists. I am engaged in the 'conservation of stereotypes' because they contain the true genetic code of a nation, which we must reinterpret in order to move forward."

A key figure of the "New Ukrainian Wave" and Ukrainian Neo-Baroque. His art explores national stereotypes and cultural myths. Co-founder of the "Natsprom" group. Tistol's works, from the "Mountains" cycle to the "Money" project, represent a unique synthesis of Soviet cliches and post-modern irony, becoming a symbol of contemporary Ukrainian identity on the world stage.
Oleg Tistol is a central figure of the "New Ukrainian Wave" and contemporary intellectual art. His creative journey began with a radical re-evaluation of Soviet academism and the search for a new national identity within the Neo-Baroque aesthetic. Tistol became the ideologist behind the "conservation of stereotypes" concept, transforming common visual clichés—from palm trees and mountains to state currency and heraldry—into profound objects of artistic analysis. Together with Mykola Matsenko, he co-founded the "Natsprom" project, which served as a manifesto for exploring the Ukrainian cultural code through the lens of irony and monumentalism. The artist masterfully works with multilayered meanings, where painterly expression merges with conceptual rigor. His success at international auctions such as Phillips and Sotheby’s, and his participation in the Venice Biennale, have solidified his status as a "living classic."
