About the artwork
The painting presents a primate skull in three-quarter profile, wearing a dark fur ushanka adorned with an insignia badge. Thick, visible brushstrokes and impasto texture build the form of the skull, the heavy texture of the winter hat, and the muted, olive-grey background. The composition uses a subdued palette of off-white bone tones, dark charcoal, and ochre, highlighted by the red and gold of the emblem. Ilya Chichkan is an ironic and provocative painter, recognized as a defining symbol of Ukraine’s “New Wave” art movement. Measuring 35 × 45 cm, this compact, satirical piece works well as a distinct accent in a study, library, or a contemporary art collection.Details
