About

"Stone should not be conquered. True sculpture is born only when you stop imposing your will on the material and start listening to its silence. I am merely liberating a form that has been waiting for this moment inside the stone for millions of years."

Xavier Escala is a Spanish sculptor and master of direct carving. His work fuses Catalan plasticity with the classical traditions of the Carrara school. Escala skillfully navigates the contrast of textures, creating sensual forms that balance between figurative and abstract art. Featured in top global art fairs, his works explore the human inner world through the medium of stone, bronze, and wood.
Xavier Escala is an outstanding Spanish sculptor whose name is associated with the revival of classical mastery through the prism of modern plastics. Born in Catalonia and trained in Carrara, Italy, he became a master of the rare direct carving technique. His method involves a direct dialogue with the material without preliminary models, requiring flawless intuition. Escala's sculptures impress with their tactility: he combines polished marble surfaces that mimic the softness of skin with rough, unworked stone. This contrast symbolizes the struggle between the spiritual and the earthly, the fragility of the moment and the eternity of stone. Over the last fifteen years, Xavier has been a significant figure in the Ukrainian cultural landscape, presenting his "Soul of Stone" project and participating in art residences. His work is a profound exploration of human nature, captured in marble, bronze, and wood.

Personal
  • "Direct Carving" Philosophy: Xavier is one of the few contemporary sculptors who works in the technique of direct carving without preliminary maquettes or clay models. This requires phenomenal spatial imagination and the ability to make irreversible decisions while working with stone.
  • Mastery of Visual Contrasts: His unique creative signature is the combination of perfectly polished marble surfaces resembling delicate skin with the raw, "organic" texture of the material. This achievement in processing technique allows him to create an illusion of softness within hard rock.
  • Synthesis of European Schools: Escala has successfully merged Catalan emotional plasticity with the academic rigor of the Italian Carrara school. This cultural fusion has made his style recognizable on a global scale.
  • Long-term Impact on the Ukrainian Art Scene: For over 15 years, the artist has been integrated into the Ukrainian art environment. His participation in residencies (Biruchiy) and major projects in Kyiv and Kharkiv is a personal achievement in establishing cultural dialogue between Spain and Ukraine.
  • Multidisciplinary Excellence: Achieving perfection not only in marble but also in bronze casting and wood, allowing him to realize ideas of any scale—from intimate cabinet sculptures to urban monuments.
