William John Kennedy is an American photographer and chronicler of the Pop Art golden age. He created the famous "Lost Archive," featuring unique, intimate shots of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. Kennedy captured these iconic images right before the artists achieved global fame. His works, held in The Warhol Museum, blend personal intimacy with monumental significance for art history.

William John Kennedy is an outstanding American photographer whose name is forever inscribed in history as the primary chronicler of the Pop Art era. For over half a century, his most valuable negatives were considered lost until the author accidentally rediscovered them in 2008. This "Lost Archive" became a sensation, revealing intimate portraits of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana at the dawn of their careers. Kennedy did not merely capture faces; he created a visual metaphysics of the creative process. He is the author of the iconic shot of Warhol with the Marilyn Monroe acetate film. Ukraine holds a special place in the artist's biography, having hosted the first large-scale European premiere of his archive in 2011. Today, Kennedy's works are part of the permanent collection at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and continue to be exhibited at leading venues in London and New York.

Personal

2022 "The Lost Archive" Monograph: The publication of his fundamental book by ACC Artbooks (2022) served as a crowning achievement of his life and professional recognition of his contribution to world culture.
2011 Cultural Visionary: By choosing Ukraine for the first European premiere of his archive in 2011, he created a precedent where a global art event of this scale launched specifically in Kyiv.
2008 Rediscovery of "The Lost Archive": In 2008, Kennedy performed a true feat for art history by finding 50-year-old negatives in his own storage. This discovery added hundreds of previously unknown pages to the biographies of Warhol and Indiana.
Creator of an Iconic Image: Kennedy captured one of the most famous portraits in art history—the shot of Andy Warhol holding the Marilyn Monroe acetate. This image became the visual symbol of the entire Pop Art movement.
Top-tier Museum Recognition: A major achievement was the acquisition of 100 of his works for the permanent collection of The Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh). This remains the largest acquisition of works by a single photographer in the museum's history.
Chronicler of the "Golden Age": He is the only photographer who managed to capture Robert Indiana in his Coenties Slip studio at the exact moment the legendary "LOVE" series was being created.
