About

"Nature is my main teacher. Every petal, every sunbeam on a wall is already a finished painting; one only needs to catch that moment of light and transfer it to the canvas so that it warms the viewer across the decades."

Vasyl Chehodar (1918–1989) is a classic of 20th-century Ukrainian painting and a master of luminous impressionism. His art is the poetry of sunlight, blooming nature, and lyrical images of Kyiv. Using bold brushwork, he created vibrant canvases where light itself is the protagonist. His iconic views of the Dnieper and blooming chestnuts are symbols of an era filled with warmth and harmony.
Vasyl Chehodar (1918–1989) was a prominent representative of the Kyiv school of painting, whose work embodied "quiet" and life-affirming impressionism. He dedicated his life to exploring the nature of light, making it the central protagonist of his canvases. His method is rooted in plein air painting, where an immediate impression of nature is transformed into deep philosophical contemplation. Chehodar's style is distinguished by bold impasto brushwork and a vibrant palette, creating an effect of vibrating air and solar radiance. The artist became a true chronicler of Kyiv: his series featuring blooming chestnuts, the Dnieper slopes, and the streets of Podil are canonical examples of lyrical landscape. His works are free from the ideological weight of the era, focusing instead on the beauty of existence and the harmony between architecture and nature. This art creates an emotional space filled with warmth and hope.
