About

"For me, art is a way to legalize what we are afraid to see in the mirror. I'm not interested in perfect form, but in living matter that has a history, wrinkles, and experience.

Volodymyr Sai is a master of ironic conceptualism and the "aesthetics of the ugly." His work focuses on exploring corporeality, physiology, and aging. Using unconventional materials such as ceramics, fat, or skin, he creates images that balance between the grotesque and profound humanism. Sai redefines the boundaries of beauty, finding artistic value in imperfection and fragility.
Volodymyr Sai is one of the most brilliant and provocative figures in contemporary Ukrainian art. His creative method is often defined as the "aesthetics of the ugly," yet behind the external grotesque lies a profound humanism and a philosophical reflection on the fragility of existence. Sai transforms materials that typically cause repulsion—fat, skin, rough ceramics—into objects of high intellectual tension. His renowned series of miniature sculptures, "The Homeless," became an anthropological study of social vulnerability, where each tiny character is endowed with personal dignity. The author focuses on themes of aging, the wear and tear of the body, and the transformation of matter, rejecting a "glamorous" view of the world in favor of true physiology. In the large-scale project "The Garden," Sai creates a mythological space where ceramic figures become metaphors for memory and time. His works do not merely record decay but reveal the inner structure of life.

Personal
  • Pioneer of the "Aesthetic of the Ugly": Say was among the first Ukrainian artists to make destruction, physiological decay, and "unattractive" bodily states a central theme of contemporary art, turning them into objects of high intellectual tension.
  • Material Innovator: Made history in Ukrainian art through radical experiments with unconventional materials—using lard (the "Fat" project) and leather as artistic media that mimic organic flesh.
  • Reformer of Ceramics: Transformed the perception of ceramics from a decorative craft into a powerful tool for conceptual art, where the texture of the material carries profound philosophical meaning.
  • Creator of Iconic Micro-Narratives: His series of miniature sculptures, "Homeless," became cult-classic by offering a new perspective on social vulnerability through extreme detail and empathy.
  • Long-term Leadership at Ya Gallery: For decades, he has remained one of the key authors of Pavlo Gudimov's art center, shaping the face of modern Ukrainian intellectual art.
